What is Professional Year?

In general, professional Year is a program that provides training that exposes you to Australian work culture and helps you improve your professionalism at work, this program will also help you with finding an internship that will give you a further experience in your chosen career path.

For migration purpose, the professional year program will grant you an extra 5 points towards your EOI points for certain subclasses (such as 189, 190 and 491). The professional year program will also satisfy a requirement for your skills assessment replacing the needs of course-related work experience.

PYP (Pros)

The main reasons for most applicants are to meet the requirement for skills assessment due to the absence of course-related work experience. However, the applicants are not required to enrol in this program if the applicants managed to find a course-related job and are eligible for skills assessment. The applicants are still able to find jobs while taking this program.

Other reasons, exposure to work experience and Australian work culture

On completion, you will get 5 points to count towards your skilled migration EOI points (491, 190 and 189).

Note: professional year program is not mandatory but it is a safe way to secure skills assessment to prevent the waste of time depending on your scenario.

PYP (Cons)

The main reason why applicants think twice for this program is that this program is not cheap, professional year program usually cost $11,000.00+ AUD however this program guarantee the skills assessment at the end of the entire program (skills assessment fee is not included in the $11,000.00+ AUD).

Another reason is that the internship will require the commitment of at least a part-time work timetable which will interfere with main source of income.

if the reasons above impact you, you will need to plan your financials and main source of income properly before taking the program.

Our recommendation, Check with your migration agent if you need to undertake this program for skilled migration points and if you have enough time on your current visa to complete the internship as the internship is dependent on the provider to find one, sometimes there are not enough host companies if you are in a small regional city.
